Fluorescein angiography

Fluorescein angiography - our practice is committed to the medical treatment of retina and vitreous disorders. We provide services than range from retinal diagnostics to laser treatment. We are also committed to patient education and encourage patients to actively participate in their treatment. In addition to skilled physicians, we have also expanded our equipment to include optical coherent tomography and fluorescein angiogram. Fluorescein angiography (FA) is a diagnostic test which uses a special photosensitive dye to examine the circulation of the retina. This test is very useful for finding leakage or damage to the blood vessels which nourish the retina. Fluorescein is a yellow vegetable dye which glows in visible light. Some patients may have an allergic reaction to the dye. Hives are the most common, however anaphylactic shock has been recorded. In this test the colored vegetable dye is injected into a vein in the arm of the patient. The dye travels through the circulatory system and reaches the vessels in the retina and choroid. The FA test begins with some color photos of the fundus, followed by red-free photos. Following this, the fluorescein dye is injected into the bloodstream. Immediately pictures are taken approximately once ever second for about 20 seconds, then less often. Over the course of about 8 minutes pictures are taken so that the transit of the dye in the eye's circulation can be examined. Findings of hyperfluorescence or hypofluorescence on the FA may reflect pathologic changes in the retina. Causes of hyperfluorescence can indicate leakage from capillaries or neovascularization; pooling can indicate serous retinal detachment; and staining may represent drusen. Causes of hypofluorescence may include blood that is causing blockage; filling defect from capillary non-perfusion or artery and vein occlusions.

Once the test is complete, our physician will review the digital photos with the patient, render a diagnosis, and offer any available treatment options.
