PRK

What is PRK ?

Wavescan PRK is a procedure to correct varying degrees of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

How Does PRK Work ?

Wavescan PRK works by changing the shape of the front surface of the eye known as the cornea. PRK involves removing the outer surface “epithelium” of the eye. This is different from LASIK in which a flap is created in the cornea to expose tissue underneath. The laser is then used to shape the cornea. A protective contact lens is then placed on the eye to allow the surface of the eye to heal over a period of several days.

What is the PRK Experience Like ?

PRK is performed at Gabriele Eye Institute on an outpatient basis. We use only permanently placed Wavescan laser in Michiana. PRK takes approximately 5 – 10 minutes to perform per eye. It is painless and done in a relaxed environment. During the procedure you will only see a target light and not be able to “see” the surgery. Afterwards any discomfort can be controlled with medication and artificial tears. You should be able to return to light activities the next day and back to most forms of work in 3 -4 days.

Will I be able to Meet My Surgeon and ask him Questions Prior to Surgery ?

At Gabriele Eye Institute, you meet personally with Dr. Phillip Gabriele on your very first visit instead of a paid “refractive coordinator”. You can discuss your individual needs with Dr. Gabriele and he will be happy to answer all of your questions.

Is Everyone a Candidate for PRK Surgery ?

NO.  There are certain individuals who should not have PRK surgery. Some people have eyes that are so near/ farsighted that PRK will not be able to safely correct their focusing problems. Fortunately Gabriele Eye Institute is proud to offer other refractive procedures to help reduce your dependence on glasses. Dr. Phillip Gabriele will personally discuss these options with you if you are not a PRK candidate.

Will Insurance Pay for PRK ?

Medical Insurance will generally not pay for PRK surgery. There are some insurance plans that do offer PRK as an added benefit and many Flex/ Pre-Tax spending plans can be used for PRK.

Are Payment Plans Available ?

We offer attractive financing options for your convenience and PRK surgery can be financed through most corporate Flex-plans.
