Frequently Asked Questions
| What exactly is Aquaflow? |
Aquaflow refers to an FDA approved procedure that can lower eye pressure
(the cause of glaucoma) safely and effectively for both early and more
advanced glaucoma. It involves the placement of a tiny strip of collagen
on the outside of the eye and under the eyelid. This lets fluid leave
the eye in a slow controlled manner and avoids the risks and discomfort
associated with older glaucoma procedures. We have been greatly impressed
at how effective this quick procedure is at stopping glaucoma damage
and preserving the sight of our patients.

Am I a good candidate
for the Aquaflow procedure? |

can discuss if Aquaflow is an appropriate decision for you. Good Aquaflow
candidates are those who have glaucoma and for whom drops and/or laser
treatment have failed or are not indicated.

What will I experience
during the Aquaflow procedure? |
After your eye has been completely "numbed" by eye numbing drops,
an eyelid holder will be placed on your eyelids to keep you from blinking.
You will NOT feel pain. Although you will be awake during the procedure
you will not be able to "see" the procedure occurring. All you will
perceive are shadows and bright lights.
Afterwards the eyes may feel scratchy for a few days. You can get back
to your normal activities in the next day or so. You will be given some
mild anti-anxiety medication prior to the procedure so you will need
a driver that day.

| What exactly is LASIK? |
LASIK literally stands for laser assisted In-situ Keratomileusis.
In easier to understand terms, LASIK is a procedure in which a Laser
is used to reshape the front surface of the eye known as the cornea.
It is this front surface that determines if your eye is nearsighted,
farsighted, or has astigmatism. LASIK has been performed for over two
decades on hundreds of thousands of Americans every year.

Am I a good candidate
for LASIK / refractive surgery? |
After a thorough examination, your optometrist or ophthalmologist
can discuss if LASIK is an appropriate decision for you. Good LASIK
candidates are those who's refractive error (focusing problems) are
within the FDA guidelines of treatment for nearsightedness, farsightedness,
and astigmatism.
Your expectations are also important. The decision to have LASIK is
an important one that only you can make. Although many of our patients
do indeed see 20/20 or better after LASIK, this is the ideal target
and not the goal of the procedure. The goal of LASIK is to reduce or
eliminate your dependence on corrective lenses.
It is important to base your decision on facts, not hopes or misconceptions.
LASIK cannot correct a condition called presbyopia, or the natural aging
of the eye, which may cause the need for reading glasses. Dr Gabriele
will provide you with all of the information you need to make an informed
decision.

Is LASIK the best
refractive procedure for me? |
LASIK is only one of many refractive procedures performed at the
Gabriele Eye Institute that can eliminate eye
focusing problems. However there are people whose focusing errors are
so great, or who have other eye conditions that LASIK is not their best
option. The Gabriele Eye Institute offers the most complete range of
surgical options in Northern Indiana and Southern Michigan. If you are
not a candidate for LASIK you still may have other options.

Can people over 40 see BOTH near and distant
objects after LASIK? |
After approximately the age of 40 one usually loses their ability
to see at near easily. This is due to the loss of flexibility of the
aging eye's focusing system. In order to see at near and at distance
after 40-50 years of age one usually needs to use reading glasses or
as an alternative use one eye for near and one eye for distance. This
is called MONOVISION. Some people love this and some hate it. It is
best to have your optometrist try this out with you with glasses or
contacts prior to undergoing LASIK, in order to see if this is what
you want after LASIK.

| What exactly is Crystalens? |
Crystalens is surgical procedure whereby an artificial lens is gently
placed in the eye to allow it to seamlessly focus at objects near, far
and in between. The lens replaces the natural lens in your eye that
lies behind the colored part of your eye (the Iris). The natural lens
no longer has the flexibility to change focus, which is why you presently
need bifocals or reading glasses.
