Corneal Disease and Transplantation

What is Corneal Disease ?

The front surface of the eye is known as the cornea. It sits in front of the colored part of the eye ( the iris ) much the way a watch crystal is in front of the face of a watch.

This tissue can become damaged by disease or trauma. It can scar, become hazy, swell and even begin to cause pain. When this cannot be controlled by medicine then a corneal transplant is indicated.

What causes corneal disease ?

Corneas can be damaged from many causes. These include but are not limited to infection, trauma, congenital/ hereditary conditions and degenerative changes from aging.

Who Develops Corneal Disease ?

Corneal disease can occur in people of any age. Those who have a family history of corneal disease are at increased risk.

What are the Symptoms of Corneal Disease ?

Corneal disease first presents as mild haziness and blurring of the vision. If the cornea is inflamed this may be associated with pain and redness of the eye. This can progress slowly or rapidly to more significant cloudiness of the vision with possibly some discomfort. Usually one eye is affected at a time, however, occasionally both eyes can be involved.

Can Corneal Disease Be Prevented ?

Many forms of corneal disease can be prevented, especially those associated with trauma or infection. Proper eye safety glasses need to be worn when working with tools and when engaged in certain sports. Also contact lens wearers must closely follow their Optometrists instructions in order to prevent damage to the cornea.

How is Corneal Disease Treated ?

Many corneal conditions can be treated through medical means. The precise treatment will depend on the underlying cause of the corneal problem.

There are times, however, when the damage to the cornea is so severe that the only way to improve the vision is to have a Corneal Transplant.

A Corneal Transplant is a procedure whereby the diseased/ damaged cornea is replaced by the cornea donated from another person. This can sometimes take up to an hour to perform but is painless by numbing drops during surgery. It will take several months for one to obtain their best vision, so patience is needed during this period. Fortunately Dr. Gabriele performs an Advanced Technique right here in Michiana that allows the beginning of the suture removal process at only 6 weeks providing the fastest visual recovery possible.
